Education

Robotics competition coming to Rockford: Alex Gary of the Rockford Register Star produced a fantastic post about this event coming in August to Rock Valley College. Called the Rock River Off-Regional competition, or “R2OC”, this event may bring in over 20 robotics teams and approximately 400 students from the Midwest. Six of those teams are in Northern Illinois, with 2 of those from Rockford that encompass students from all 4 public schools.

Government

Reclaiming First moves to Senate: A unanimous vote has sent the Reclaiming First bill to the senate. The bill that will increase hotel taxes for additional revenue to pay for renovations and additions to Sportscore, hopes to see passage by May 1st.

Community

Rock River Valley Events this weekend: Camping and Travel show at the ISC; Easter egg hunt at the Rock Valley College Veteran’s Club; Coronado hosts Handel’s ‘Messiah’ performed by Mendelssohn Chorale; Annual Model Train Show & Sale at Jefferson High School

Rockford Health Council visits Fairgrounds: The Fairgrounds Valley Housing Complex has partnered with the Rockford Health Council to offer an event titled “Fitness for Life”. The event will be held on Sunday, March 24th from 1 PM to 3 PM and will feature a body fitness workshop designed to combat an unhealthy lifestyle.

Monday hours returning to main library: Corina Curry states that the Rockford Public Library may be working on a plan to bring back Monday hours. When? In the next two to three months. RPL Board President Paul Logli says they are working on scheduling flexibility.

Business

New agreement means more for local business: A Rockford business will benefit from a new 3 year agreement between VIPAR Heavy Duty and Accuride Corporation, the latter making wheel-end components here in Rockford at the Gunite facility. The following quote was taken from this WIFR article:

“It also is a reflection of the significant gains in quality, delivery, warranty and lead-time performance that Gunite has made during the past six months that we upgraded our local operations in Rockford.”
