Internships in the aerospace industry helps engineering students: After receiving one of 20 “Jobs & Innovation Accelerator Challenge” grants, Rockford has been working to provide job opportunities through internship and education in the engineering industry. The two year goal was met after receiving the grant: creating or retaining 2,100 area jobs, while also creating 1,600 jobs in 2012.

Government

Mayoral candidates square off in debates: It is an important time for Rockford as new leaders may be arising to take hold of our government. At 1 PM this Thursday Rockford candidates will be taking questions, while Next Rockford will be presenting a forum for the Rockford School Board, much like they did for the Rockford City Council.

Business

Local bar owner raises money for children’s home: Local bar owner Joe Pendergrass has the ability to raise $30,000 per year for the Walter Lawson Children Home. His son is disabled, giving him the inspiration to help other children who may need support. He also holds an annual golf tournament.

Safety

Swedish American Hospital launches ER check-in app: Called iTriage, this app will allow those who are on their way to the ER to check in with staff before arriving, as well as check up on symptoms, disease information, as well as information on procedures. Also, you can get medication reminders and medication refills.

Community

Girls get to go to prom, worriless of dress cost: Becca’s Closet, formed by 16-year old Florida high school student Rebecca Kirtman, makes dreams come true by helping girls, who cannot afford a dress, go to prom. Rebecca was killed in a car accident in 2003, yet her commitments were carried on by friends and family. One of 90 chapters sits right here in Rockford, Illinois.
