Christopher D. Sims

Art exists in an infinite number of formations. Life itself, some would say, is an art. Music and images, both influential in most of our lives, are artistically created to provide positive feelings for those listening or glancing upon its magic.

But one form of art that only few have mastered, an art that is used for persuasion, for philosophy, an art that ends wars, and creates change..is the art of words. I wanted to introduce one of those few, one of our very own Rockford citizens, who have been worthy enough to have mastered the indescribable art of words..

Christopher D. Sims, master of poetry, performing, and speaking, is a man with unimaginable talent. Since 1998 he has been part of a number of events, beginning at the Rockford Public Library as a poetry reciter, poetry Slam host, and open mic host. He is Rockford’s premier writer of poetry and a spoken word artist. He has created and co-hosted several successful open mics in the Rockford area, the most notable being Open Mic Night at Katie’s Cup. Christopher also educates teachers in District 205 about performing poetry, open mics, and poetry Slams. Given his reputation as a master of words, it is needless to say that he is Rockford’s most sought after events host.

Through his selfless contributions to the Rockford community our citizens have become more engaged in what Rockford has to offer. Christopher’s latest venue, “Christopher D. Sims and Friends”, brought me out to Rockford Salvino’s just last night. The talent Christopher brought on stage was emotional, funny, and above all, respected. The environment was breathtaking; to see some of our own Rockford citizens have the courage to pour out their thoughts and feelings to the audience kept my own feelings in awe. I was witness to the astounding power of words.

I urge more of our citizens to participate in these events. These events are not only worthwhile, they are part Rockford’s culture. This is the good in Rockford. We have to stop saying there is nothing here in Rockford and begin looking at the positive. People like Christopher D. Sims are everywhere. They just need to be found.

As an observer of Christopher D. Sims and Friends, I was shown that words are used to inspire through poetry and performance. Through a bit of courage and emotion you can be an inspiration to your family, to the community, and to yourself. Come on out to one of these events happening weekly in Rockford. You can network, observe, and enjoy an all-around good time with fellow citizens.

  1. Thanks for this post and for highlighting the literary events that go on in Rockford. The art of words is elusive, astounding and, as you say, indescribable when mastered. I heard Bookworm Bakery has poetry nights…I really want to go if I can only find the time and I’ve also heard great things about the open mic at Katie’s.

  2. I am glad you enjoyed the read. You should definitely come on out Sunday nights. I will be there!

  3. “The Simulator”!!! I met Chris around 1999 or 2000 while on assignment in the area. This guy is amazingly gifted and a genuinely good person. Rarely do you meet someone that is the BEST at what they do, yet humble AND helpful. Will always remember the 30 minute freestyle from Rockford to S. Beloit! #epic
